How Much Space Will I Need to Repair My Transmission? April 22, 2015

Repairing your transmission can be a big job. It is one of the biggest jobs if you are planning on replacing the entire thing. When you take on a repair job like this, you need to make sure you have ample room. Depending on the type of vehicle you have, you will need plenty of space to maneuver around the vehicle and of course enough space for the vehicle itself. While a garage is typically where you would keep your vehicle to protect it while it is being worked on, not all garages provide enough space for a repair job like this. The question is, how much space do you actually need to repair your transmission. Here are some guidelines to follow before starting a repair job like this.

When it comes to working on your vehicle you are going to need ample space to get the job done proficiently. A standard garage will not likely work if you need to be moving around the vehicle. If you own a double garage, you can move the vehicle toward the center to ensure you have plenty of space to get around the car. You are likely to need a jack and jack stand. This can take up some room in your garage.

Before even getting started on the repair job, you need to check around you to make sure you have a safe and clean area allowing you to work efficiently. You do not want to be stumbling over stuff especially if you are carrying tools or expensive parts for your vehicle. By cleaning up the area ahead of time, you can ensure that you have plenty of room to get the job done.

You also need to assess how much space your tools and parts will take up. If you are planning on replacing the entire transmission, you will need a safe spot for the new one to stay in while you are removing the old one. A new transmission can be very expensive and the last thing you want to do is damage it with your vehicle or something else.

If you suspect you can get the job done within a day, you may want to work on the vehicle outside. This should give you much more room than inside a garage. This is not always a feasible option if the vehicle isn’t running, but if you can push it out of the garage, you would be better off. You also want to check the weather forecast to ensure there is no rain or storms in the area. You do not want to get caught working on your vehicle outside when bad weather approaches.

The preparation work before the repair job is essential to getting the transmission repaired efficiently. If you are looking to get it done in a timely manner, it is important that you have the necessary space you need. Garages or outdoor spaces are the typical places to work on your vehicle.
